Today, on July 26, 2023, we come together to commemorate a significant day in India’s history – Kargil Vijay Diwas.
1. Significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas:
It marks the victory of India in the 1999 conflict with Pakistan, a moment of immense pride and valor for our nation.
2. The Kargil War:
It was not just a regular armed conflict; it was a test of courage and sacrifice for our brave soldiers. As tensions between India and Pakistan escalated, our troops faced an intense and prolonged battle in the Kargil region.
3. The Conflict Origins:
The conflict had a historical backdrop of ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. From the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 to nuclear tests in 1998, the two nations have had their share of disputes.
4. The Covert Move by Pakistan:
In the winter of 1998-1999, the Pakistani armed forces infiltrated the Line of Control (LOC) and captured strategic positions in the Drass and Batalik Sectors of Kargil. Their objective was to gain control over crucial military and civilian movements in the area.

Initially, our soldiers believed they were dealing with terrorists or ‘jihadis’ with radical motives. However, it became clear that this was part of a well-organized plan. In response, India deployed a massive force of over 200,000 troops to defend our borders.

The Kargil War was no easy feat and came at a heavy price. We lost 527 brave soldiers from the Indian Army during this conflict.
